Post Motown

Example song: “Trying to Hold On to My Woman” by Lamont Dozier

Holland-Dozier-Holland (Lamont Dozier, Eddie Holland Jr., Brian Holland) broke from Motown in the late 1960s and started new labels: Invictus and Hot Wax. They often wrote for those labels under the pseudonym Edith Wayne.

The goal of Post Motown was to keep up with Berry Gordy’s Motown sound and Philly soul. You’ll hear clear production, sharp melodies, and elaborate arrangements with some Philly strings and psychedelic sounds. Lyrically, Post Motown tries to keep up with a changing, progressive society (feminism, specifically).
